Liguriella podophtalma

Issel, 1908

Mantle semigelatinous, smooth, slimy, widely spindle-shaped, round behind in larvae, subacute in adults. Two small conical cartilaginous tubercles each at site of head-to-mantle fusion (ML >30 mm). Head small, with "snout" (arm-crown pillar) in larvae, large in adults. Funnel large. Eyes in larvae on long stalks, rostrate (i.e., with an acute ventral outgrowth), in adults not stalked, large, globular. Fins in larvae (ML <15 mm) paddle-shaped, in adults semioval, attached to rear sides of diamond-shaped lanceola, not extending onto mantle sides anteriorly, reaching tip of lanceola or exceeding it by a bit, either joined there by a thin membrane or remaining divided by a narrow split. In larvae mantle end may exceed end of lanceola. Arms short. Suckers in 2 rows, some enlarged suckers in distal part of 3rd arms. Tentacles long, strong, not autotomized. Stalk in larvae bears 4 rows of suckers, in juveniles suckers absent in proximal third, in 2 rows in central and in 4 in proximal part of stalk. Central club suckers with sharp teeth. Medial component of funnel organ with three papillae, one central conical and two lateral spatulate. No funnel valve. Two eyeball photophores, a small elongate one in concavity of a large crescent-shaped one. No arm photophores. Light colored, with sparse dispersed chromatophores. ML up to 25 cm. Larvae and juveniles distinguishable by fins attached only to side
