Diagnosis
Caudal furca either strongly developed (long), or less developed (short). Carapace covering only dorsal brood chamber, trunk and thoracic limbs exposed. Cervical organ (a parthenogenetic female:Podon leuckarti, female) present at dorsal edge above base of antennae.
Head and compound eye relative to body much larger than in females.
Antennules very short, fixed underneath head and immovable. Antennae short, biramous; exopod 4--segmented and endopod 3-segmented with setal formula 0,1,1 or 2,4/1,1,4.
Four pairs of thoracic limbs, exopod with 1 to 4 setae.

Sexual dimorphism
Males differing from females by strong terminal claw or hook of endopod of thoracic limb 1, and a pair of penes situated anterior to postabdomen (Podon leuckarti, male).

Habitat
All species inhabiting surface layers of estuarine, coastal, or open waters of the World Ocean.
