Despite wealth of information on this species, including cytological studies (Gold and Morales, 1975), its taxonomic status still dubious, especially regarding its relationships with Tintinnopsis parvula Jörgensen (see extensive synonymies in Kofoid and Campbell, 1929, and herein).
