Cubomedusae and Scyphomedusae
Glossary of terms
The so-called Glossary module on this DVD-ROM, contains (also) the terms typically in use in the present chapter. The texts are preceeded by "[Cubo-/Scyphomedusae] ". Abbreviations used are: abbr.: abbreviation; adj.: adjective; arch.: archaic; n.: noun; obs.: obsolete or obsolescent; pl.: plural; sing.: singular; ssp.: subspecies (singular); sspp.: subspecies (plural).
For explanations of additional terms for Scyphomedusae see Russell (1970), and for Cubomedusae Southcott (1967) and Williamson et al. (1996); and for both groups Werner (1984, in German) and Franc (1995a, 1995b, in French). For terms concerning hydromedusae see Bouillon (1995, in French; and the chapter "Hydromedusae" in this volume) and Cornelius (1995). Many aspects of the biology were covered by Arai (1997). Another glossary was provided by Stachowitsch (1992).
Nematocyst terminology is mostly omitted and the reader is referred to Hessinger and Lenhoff (1988) for references to their structure and classification. Histological terms were covered by Harrison and Westfall (1991).
Some of the terms listed, especially some older ones, are little-used synonyms, and this is indicated. Since the standard monograph on the Scyphomedusae is still Mayer (1910), many of the older terms are still unfortunately used by some authors. A few standard zoological and other scientific terms are included if their application in cnidarians differs from that in literature on other groups.
