Tentacles present only in larvae, clubs short, with 6 sucker-like structures; juveniles and adults without tentacles; skin papillae leathery, without cartilaginous teeth, tightly adjoining or overlapping each other (as fish scales); fins round or suboval, not reaching mantle end, mantle tapering into long tail (acute needle in juveniles):

Lepidoteuthis grimaldii Joubin. Present in the South Atlantic but not included in this review because larvae are poorly known.
