Body elongate elliptical to D-shaped, without distinct dorsal ribs. Oral cavity narrow, extending over 3/4 of body length. Macronucleus irregularly horseshoe- to C-shaped. One contractile vacuole. Ten frontoventral, 5 transverse, 2 left marginal and 2-4 caudal cirri. Dorsal kineties 9-10 in number, with <16-22 cilia in central rows. Adoral zone extending over 2/3 of body length, composed of 53-70 membranelles. Dorsal silverline system usually of single-vannus type, rarely with irregular ramifications (Song and Packroff, 1997). Movement slowly gliding. Size in vivo 75-200 x 65-90 µm. Jankowski (1979) transferred Euplotes vannus to Moneuplotes (as type species), which was recently followed by Borror and Hill (1995). Song and Packroff (1997) synonymized Euplotes mutabilis, Euplotes roscoffensis and Euplotes sharuri with Euplotes vannus.
