Spinose, closely related to Globigerinoides sacculifer in adult morphology (Bé and Hemleben, 1970), but ontogenetic sequence (Huang, 1981) does not support close linkage between these species. In pre-adult stage Sphaeroidinella dehiscens distinguished from Globigerinoides sacculifer by very narrow aperture and calcite crust which accompanies shedding of spines prior to migration to deeper water. Thick, smooth, glassy calcite layer covers entire shell.
