Pulleniatina obliquiloculata

(Parker and Jones, 1865)

Non-spinose, wall structure similar to that of Globorotalia inflata, although coiling is streptospiral, rather than simply trochospiral. In deeper water with calcite crust which becomes smooth by addition of veneer of very small crystals. Diet comprises more chrysophytes than diatoms. Reproductive behavior suggests month-long life span including gametogenic calcification. Juveniles resemble Neogloboquadrina dutertrei.

Ref.: Prell and Damuth (1978).

Distribution: Probably restricted to warm waters; in the tropics it can account occasionally for up to 7% of the entire foraminiferal assemblage. Normally, however, very rare (<0.1%), and therefore seldom recorded.
