Genus Salpingella

Jörgensen, 1924, emend. Kofoid and Campbell

Diagnosis
Bowl thin, with fins mainly on posterior end, (although in some cases covering whole surface of bowl), with dextrogyrous torsion (sometimes obscuring aboral end opening). Funnel-shaped oral end, smooth or denticulate (= genus Salpingacantha Kofoid and Campbell, 1929).
Arranged in Subgroup 4B (see the page Ti. 15 Classification scheme based on morphologically similar groups of species).

Species treated:

Salpingella acuminata (Claparède and Lachmann, 1858-1859)
Salpingella acuminatoides (Laackmann, 1910)
Salpingella costata (Laackmann, 1910)
Salpingella regulata (Brandt, 1906)
Salpingella subconica Kofoid and Campbell, 1929

Identification of Salpingella species is extremely difficult, and consistent assignments do not seem possible at present. The fins, usually present and best developed on the posterior region of the bowl (usually extending longitudinally, with or without torsion), can also reach the anterior region, thus suggesting morphologic relationships between Salpingella acuminatoides and Salpingella costata. Although with a much shorter lorica, the general morphology of Salpingella subconica (S. subconica, S. subconica 2) strongly resembles that of S. acuminatoides. Further studies on the morphologic variability of these species are necessary in order to clarify the systematics of the genus. Therefore, the present classification must be considered provisional.
