Conical forms; with very wide mouth and stomodeum; meridional gastrovascular canals usually with numerous diverticulae. Without tentacles. Row of branched papillae in form of a figure 8 around the aboral pole. Only one family. Many species in these genera are probably synonymous. Mills et al. (1996) concluded that much confusion still persists in the specific identification in these genera, and that further revision is necessary. In the present review I follow the nomenclature used by Mayer (1912), since the materials analyzed agree well with his descriptions. Although it has been suggested that Pandora mitrata is probably a juvenile form (O'Sullivan, 1986), recent information indicates that it could be a valid species (Beroe mitrata, Mills, 1997, pers. com.). Beroe hyalina Moser 1910, is also doubtful, since its only description is based on one small individual of 15 mm, having few projections of the meridional canals with no anastomoses (Moser, 1910).
