Acanthostaurus purpurascens

(Haeckel, 1860)

Main spicules cylindrical, narrowing distally, slightly compressed, less often keeled or 4-bladed in cross section basally or distally, tips rounded. Sixteen secondary spicules 1.5 times shorter than main, more strongly compressed, two-edged; 8 polar spicules may be less compressed and shorter than 8 tropical. Equatorial spicules with 4 leaf-crosses, tropical and polar with 2. Leaf-crosses on equatorial and tropical spicules 3 times broader than maximum spicule diameter. Length of main spicules: 0.3-0.4 mm, secondary: 0.2-0.3 mm.
