—The book includes a chapter on the Heteropoda, which serves as the most recent review on the biology of the group. Many unpublished field observations, data and in-situ photographs are included.

Tesch J.J. 1949. Heteropoda. Dana Rep., 34:1-54.
—Report on the heteropods collected during the circumglobal Dana Expedition. Beginning with his detailed 1906 report on the heteropods of the Siboga Expedition and concluding with this report, Tesch brought order out of taxonomic chaos for the group, reducing significantly the number of recognized species and setting the stage for subsequent taxonomic work.

Thiriot-Quiévreux C. 1973. Heteropoda. Oceanogr. Mar. Biol. Ann. Rev., 11:237-261.
—The first review paper on the group, covering a variety of aspects of heteropod biology. Noteworthy for its breadth of topical coverage, inclusion of scanning electron micrographs and detailed treatment of developmental biology and larval morphology.

—Comprehensive treatment of taxonomy, lists of synonymies, and relevent literature through 1974. The material in this text was recently updated and published on DVD-ROM by van der Spoel et al. (1997).
