Selected synonymic references for the taxa treated

In order to facilitate backtracking the extensive systematic rearrangements proposed in the present chapter, on the next two pages:

Ti. 13 Selected synonymic references for the taxa treated (Part 1: A-E)
Ti. 14 Selected synonymic references for the taxa treated (Part 2: E-X)

all the taxa included in this review are listed alphabetically (in bold characters) followed by the corresponding names used in selected previous publications (not boldened). Species and genera of dubious validity are denoted with an asterisk (*), and a question mark (?), respectively. Doubtful synonymic entries are preceded with a question mark as well. Some previous names appear under two different species because it was considered that the corresponding publications incorrectly lumped the species in question.

This listing is far from comprehensive because it does not cover all the available literature. It does, however, include most of the publications dealing with South Atlantic materials, as well as several others from different oceanic regions which were considered of special significance (in particular Brandt, 1906-1907; Laackmann, 1910; Jörgensen, 1924; Kofoid and Campbell, 1929). Since Kofoid and Campbell's (1929) classification system has long been a standard in both systematic and ecologic studies, special emphasis was put not only on general nomenclatorial changes, but also on the large number of their species that are considered invalid (see Ti. 10 Taxonomy and Balech, 1959, 1975; Souto, 1979; Alder, 1995). Brandt's work originally appeared in two volumes published in different years (illustrations in 1906, descriptions in 1907), and is therefore cited as "Brandt, 1906-1907".
