Larvae with relatively large head, tapering body. Gut mass protruding beyond ventral profile of body, in Symphurus nigrescens and Symphurus ginsburgi conical appendix attached to trailing gut coil. Anterior dorsal rays elongate. Combination of number of short and long dorsal rays can be used for identification of species. Fin ray counts also important for species identification. Symphurus trewavasae larvae with anterior four dorsal rays elongate. Six melanophores along dorsal margin of body. Row of melanophores along ventral margin of tail (Symphurus trewavasae).
