Familia Sphyraenidae


Barracuda larvae with elongate body, 24 myomeres. Gut straight, long, extending beyond midpoint of body. Head elongates rapidly with development; snout becomes more pointed, dorso-ventrally flattened (Leis and Rennis, 1983). In Sphyraena tome two rows of paired melanophores present along ventral and dorsal mid-lines from pre-flexion stage. At 5.1 mm NL beak-like process starts to develop on tip of lower jaw (Sphyraena tome). This fleshy tip becomes prominent in juvenile, attaining one-third of upper jaw length, disappears in adult.
