Pre-flexion larvae with moderately deep, laterally compressed body. Broken line of melanophores along mid-lateral line, particularly on tail. Pre-flexion and flexion larvae with elongate, unpigmented notochord tip. Larvae moderately to heavily pigmented, often first recognized in samples because of relatively dark color (Houde, 1984b). In species of Callionymus from SW Atlantic spine on angle of pre-opercle evident from flexion stage (about 2.5 mm). In Paracallionymus costatus larvae this spine very small even in post-flexion larvae (Olivar, 1987b) (Paracallionymus costatus).
