Dominant group in SW Atlantic, many larval stages known. Larvae with relatively large head, tapering tail. Menticirrhus americanus larvae without head spination. Anterior and posterior margins of pre-opercle serrated. Melanophores on mid-lateral line extending from trunk to caudal peduncle. Small melanophores also scattered on head region (Sinque, 1980) (Menticirrhus americanus).
