Eggs planktonic, variously ornamented with filaments for attachment to floating objects. Larvae in post-flexion stage similar to those of belonids, with opposing dorsal and anal fins on the tail, heavily pigmented body. In juvenile stage, ventral and pectoral fins start to develop, and conspicuous paired barbels or fleshy beaks develop on tip of lower jaw in some species (Hardy, 1978a).
