Larvae with large jaws, short, triangular gut covered by one or two very large melanistic blotches. Eyes narrow. Benthalbella larvae with elongate body, not developing peritoneal pigment until transformation. Larvae of Rosenblattichthys, Scopelarchus and Scopelarchoides shorter and deeper. Gut pigmentation characteristic for each genus or group of apparently related species (Johnson, 1984a, Ozawa, 1986f) (Scopelarchus analis).
