Larvae with elongate, compressed body, extremely short intestines that lengthen markedly during larval stage. Pigmentation pattern as large melanistic blotches added serially along dorsal gut as it elongates (Rofen, 1966a) (Lestidiops jayakari). Larvae of Sudis easily differentiated from rest of family by relatively short body with large head, long pectoral fins, long gut with early-established melanistic blotches; with spinetipped flanges on ventral margin of pre-opercle, over eye and snout (Okiyama, 1984, Ozawa, 1986g).
