Larvae with simple tubular gut, to 90% of the body length. Body elongate. Snout sharp, with concave profile. Larvae of Nemichthys extremely elongate, with filiform tail. Those of Avocettina less elongate, with normal caudal structure. Myomeres very numerous, ca. 400 in Nemichthys, ca. 200 in Avocettina. Pigmentation below the spinal cord in both genera (Smith, 1979).
