Familia Congridae

Relatively large number of larvae known. With simple tubular gut, more than 75% of body length (Ariosoma sp, Gnathophis mystax). Body and head morphology, and number of myomeres, variable. Larvae with short heads generally have crescentic patch of pigment below the eye (Smith, 1979). Blache (1977) described larvae of some species in detail, and Castle (1984) summarized pigment and morphological characters of some species and genera.
