Ordo Anguilliformes


Available information on eggs (Castle, 1984) indicates they are of large diameter, with smooth chorion, segmented yolk, and wide perivitelline space. Leptocephali with W-shaped myomeres, numbering more than 100 in most species (Charter and Moser, 1996a). Identification of larvae to family level can be based on morphological and pigmentation features pointed out by Smith (1979), Blache (1977) and Castle (1984).
