Ordo Albuliformes


Albulidae larvae with origin of anal fin appreciably posterior to dorsal. Albulids Albula vulpes and Pterothrissus belloci (Pterothrissus belloci) with very different myomere counts (65-72 versus 85-92 respectively) (Richards, 1969a, 1984; Olivar and Fortuño, 1991). Notacanthid Leptocephalus giganteus known from few larval specimens, characterized by very elongate body with filamentous postcaudal region (Castle, 1967), long straight gut, late-developing pelvic fin (Moser and Charter, 1996).
