Diagnosis corresponding to that of subfamily Pyrostremmatinae, since only a single genus has been recognized.
Van Soest (1981) recognized two species: Pyrostremma spinosum and Pyrostremma agassizi, both recorded from the South Atlantic Ocean. A third species, Pyrostremma vitjasi Ivanova-Kazas, 1956, has been considered a synonym of Pyrostremma agassizi.
