Head small, usually shorter than pereonite I. Eyes small, composed of few facets, or absent. Integument weak. MD without molar, MX I with inner lobe, MXP often with separate inner lobes. ANT I with strong, conical proximal flagellar ART, 0-3 rudimentary apical ART in both males and females. Mainly deep-water animals.

All Physosomata are associated with various gelatinous plankton, mainly with deep-water jellyfish and siphonophores.
