Genus Carinaria

Lamarck, 1801

The visceral nucleus is stalked and located dorsally above or immediately posterior to the ventral swimming fin. The nucleus is covered by a cap-shaped shell. Following metamorphosis the teleoconch grows directly from the protoconch, which is retained at the shell apex. In contrast with the Atlantidae, there is a clear junction between the protoconch and teleoconch. A pair of tentacles are located ahead of the eyes (like in Atlantidae), but they can be of unequal size, with the right tentacle often reduced or vestigial. Eye morphology is a taxonomic character only in distinguishing C. cithara (cylindrical shape) from the other species of Carinaria (triangular shape) (Okutani, 1961). The tail has a dorsal crest, developed to varied degrees.
