Body usually large, contractile, heavily ciliated; sometimes very elongate or nearly ellipsoidal. Adoral zone and paroral membrane prominent. Macronucleus long and moniliform. Contractile vacuole often with long collecting canal. In marine, freshwater and edaphic habitats.
