Ordo Arthracanthida

Schewiakoff, 1926

Order is divided into two suborders on basis of shape and arrangement of spicules in their basal region. Endoplasm always containing numerous zooxanthellae. Contrary to three other orders of Acantharia, gametogenesis occurs in a gamont which keeps the aspect of the trophont. Whole endoplasm converted into biflagellate gametes which are shed across capsular wall at maturity.
