Larvae with peculiar form, passing two stages of metamorphosis. In early larval stage body covered by globule-like dermal sac, with protruding tail. Pre-juvenile stage of Ranzania laevis characterized by series of serrate spines over head and body. Caudal fin degenerates during metamorphosis from larva to pre-juvenile stage, and two ladder-like fins appear on caudal area, probably derived from posterior part of dorsal and anal fins (Leis, 1977) (Ranzania laevis).
