Familia Balistidae


Eggs demersal, deposited on bottom substrate, guarded by parents, larvae pelagic. From early stages small cluster of spinules appears on pre-opercle, persisting until just prior to flexion stage. Balistes capriscus larvae with round anterior body, tapering tail. At 3.0 mm NL two dorsal spines appear; second dorsal and anal fins appear soon after at 3.2 mm NL. Anterior part of body darkly pigmented. Series of small melanophores along ventral margin of tail and on caudal membrane (Balistes capriscus).
