Congiopodus spinifer passes through unique and strikingly beautiful larval phase, characterized by exaggerated development of pectoral fins, from yolk-sac stage on. Yolk-sac and pre-flexion larvae with conspicuous pigments on mid-tail, along dorsal surface of the gut, along shoulder girdle, and on corner of lower jaw. Post-flexion larvae heavily pigmented, with well developed pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins. Supra-occipital crest and pterotic spine well developed (Brownell, 1979) (Congiopodus spinifer).
