Familia Macrouridae

All deep-water dwellers, their eggs and larvae rare in ichthyoplankton samples. Identification to family level can be based on: large number of myomeres, lack of caudal fin, and very narrow base of pectoral fins. Coelorhynchus occa larvae with large head, elongate tail. Head, abdomen, and anterior part of tail darkly pigmented, terminating abruptly to leave tip of tail colorless (Merrett, 1989) (Coelorhynchus occa).
