All four known Merluccius larvae similar, characterized by relatively large head, narrow and slightly pedunculate pectoral fin. Merluccius capensis larvae with conspicuous melanophores on lateral body side just behind anus, between anus and caudal fin, and on ventral side near tip of notochord. Number of scattered melanophores also on occipital region (Merluccius capensis).
