According to Okiyama (1984) Alepisaurus ferox larvae with large head and mouth, prominent canine teeth, short gut with heavy pigmentation. Post-flexion larvae with four small pre-opercular spines and pigment patches at anal fin origin. Pre-flexion larvae may be confused with Scopelarchidae, but eyes more rounded in former (Ambrose, 1996b).
