Familia Stomiidae

Larvae highly diverse. Larvae of Stomias and Chauliodus (Chauliodus sloani) elongate with very long intestines, extending almost entire length of body. Eyes small, elliptical. Main differences between these two genera are circular cross of body, lack of pigmentation along ventral body margin, and more anterior position of dorsal fin in Chauliodus. Other genera of this family with deeper body, characterized by trailing last portion of the gut, which can be very long in some species like Idiacanthus (Kawaguchi and Moser, 1984).
