Larvae from very slender as in Dolichopteryx binocularis to deep-bodied as in Opisthoproctus grimaldii or Rhynchohyalus natalensis, all with elongate pectoral and pelvic fins. Main pigmentation features of known opisthoproctid larvae useful for genus identification. Dolichopteryx with lateral series of melanophores above gut. Rhynchohyalus with several dusky bars from pelvic fin to caudal fin base. Opisthoproctus larvae with slanted melanophores on the hypaxial myomeres (Ahlstrom et al., 1984b).
