Familia Gonorynchidae

Only one of two marine families of Gonorynchiformes recorded in the Atlantic.
Olivar and John (1987) described post-larvae of Gonorynchus gonorynchus based on specimens collected around southern tip of Africa. Larvae elongate, with long gut (79-81 % of body length), similar to clupeiform larvae. Lack of swim bladder and blunt snout differentiate larvae of this species from clupeiforms. Pigmentation as row of discrete melanophores slightly below lateral line, and one dorsal and another ventral rows of melanophores on caudal peduncle.
