With simple tubular gut, which is 50% of body length in some species, up to 75% in others (Muraena robusta). Body depth less than 50% of total length. Pectoral fin greatly reduced or absent. Pigmentation scarce, although presence or absence of several pigments is used for identification (Castle, 1984).
