Characterized by development of leptocephalus during larval stage. Although leptocephalus of first two orders has pelvic fins, last two orders lack these fins. Larvae of Albuliformes and Elopiformes (except Notacanthidae) with dorsal and anal fins separated from forked caudal fin, no separation of these three fins in Anguilliformes and Saccopharyngiformes. Caudal fin absent in Notacanthidae.
