Familia Oxycephalidae

Dana, 1853

Small to large animals (9-150 mm). Body elongate to needle-like (Calamorhynchus pellucidus 1). Head with pointed rostrum, which may be very long; sometimes with distinct neck (Cranocephalus scleroticus 1). Eyes large, occupying main part of head surface except neck and rostrum. ANT II absent in female. MD with palp in male, without in female. Maxillae I and II completely absent. Coxae usually free, sometimes fused with pereonites. P I and II chelate or subchelate, P I rarely simple. P VII usually with full number of ART, sometimes a few distal ART reduced. In females gills and oostegites both forming marsupium.
