Diagnosis
Head and carapace always separated by distinct cervical groove (Podon leuckarti, female).
Postabdomen ended with pair of long caudal furcae.
Exopods of thoracic limbs 1-3 with 1,1,1 or 2,1,1 setae.

Differential sexual characters
Female: brood pouch oval to hemispherical. Resting eggs: spherical, membrane furnished with ornamentations; perimeter indistinct (Podon leuckarti, female).
Male: dorsal part small, triangular, with a pair of testes; head and eye large relative to female; terminal seta of endopod of first thoracic limb transformed into recurved hook (Podon leuckarti, male), a pair of copulatory appendages (penes) located posterior to the last pair of thoracic limbs.
