[Cubo-/Scyphomedusae] In coronate and some semaeostome medusae, diverticulae from the stomach extending to or nearly to the edge of the bell or disc, performing the internal transport function done by radial canals in other medusae. Peripherally, the stomach pouches may fork into several much narrower diverticulae or sub-pouches, and these may branch. The stomach-pouch in some ways recalls the open blood-system found in arthropods. Rhopalar stomach-pouch: one in a rhopalar radius; tentacular stomach-pouch: one in a tentacular radius. Gastrovascular pouch is a less appropriate term since the pouches are of the stomach alone. See also gastrovascular.
