[Amphipoda] A bilaterally symmetrical structure forming a partition behind the mouth. It consists of one pair of lateral or outer lobes, provided with lateral projections, and one pair of inner lobes, which are often reduced or fused. Lips, especially the lower one, are important taxonomic characters for the gammarids, but are of little use in hyperiids.
